Scenic, historic, friendly, and accomodating. Born at the beginning of the 20th century in these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and on the banks of the New River, Fries VA began as a textile mill town. Manufacturing ceased a few years ago and Fries has become a premier destination for vacationing and outdoor recreation.
The New River is famous for its' fishing, canoeing, and kayaking and the New River Trail (one trail head in downtown Fries) is everyone's favorite for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
Grayson County and Carroll County, which include Fries, Galax, Hillsville, and Independence VA, have a multitude of activities and special events throughout the year, something going on all the time. Festivals begin with the Whitetop Mountain Maple Festival the last full weekend in March and run through October with many fiddler's conventions, celebrations, and smaller weekly events with bluegrass and mountain music in between.
